Harriet Harman Elected Chair of Commons Standards Committee

Former deputy Labour leader, Harriet Harman, has been elected as the new chair of the Commons Standards Committee, succeeding Sir Chris Bryant, now a Labour shadow minister.

Known for chairing the Commons inquiry into Boris Johnson’s party-gate, Harman takes on this role alongside Liam Byrne and Cat Smith, chairing the business and trade, and petitions committees, respectively.

Securing 341 votes, Harman, dubbed “Mother of the House” for being the longest-serving female MP, will take up the position immediately, with an additional salary of £17,354, augmenting her MP’s salary of £86,584.

The role of chair in these committees is traditionally held by Labour MPs.
